Cassava Republic People

Cassava Republic was initiated by Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, who is supported by her partner Jeremy Weate.  We have an assistant who daily oils the engine of the company.  We also have volunteer consultants who provide strategic support, as well as a team of freelance editors who help to review manuscripts.

Bibi Bakare-Yusuf is 36 years of age.  She grew up in Lagos until the age of 12, when she moved to the UK to study.  Bibi has a PhD in Gender Studies from the University of Warwick.  As well as teaching film-making to disadvantaged youth in London, Bibi has also worked for various arts and environmental organisations and lectured at Warwick University in the areas of feminist theory and cultural studies. Motivated by a desire to contribute to the transformation of the society, she moved back to Nigeria with her British partner Jeremy Weate in 2003, to take up a position as Senior Research at Obafemi Awolowo University.  She has worked as a gender consultant for UNIFEM, ActionAid, European Union and a number of development agencies.  Bibi has published several articles in major international academic journals.

Jeremy Weate has a PhD in philosophy from Warwick.  He is also author of the best-selling children’s book A Young Person’s Guide to Philosophy (published by Dorling Kindersley), translated into 8 languages.  Jeremy worked as a consultant and strategist for several of the leading digital-transformation companies in the UK for many years before moving to Nigeria.  After a year working for Phillips Consulting, Jeremy moved to Abuja to work as a consultant for the European Union.  He has put his expertise in online business into practice here in Nigeria by setting up www.lagoslive.com – Nigeria’s leading city portal.
